Memories- Winter Break assignment

I have so many memories with so many different people it is mind-boggling. Spending time with people brings new memories and there are those things that never die. Some of the best memories happened in middle school. I had the same group of friends all though out the three years of middle school. During our second year, I had a friend that has a very nice and a brilliant idea. Every Friday after school some one would pick all of us up and head to her house. Every week, it just depended on the situation to how many people where there. On a normal week there were 7 to 10 people. Being as all of us were hungry, we would always have food. Cooper’s, whose house we were at, mom or dad would cook amazing food and of course it was filling! After we filled ourselves with yummy-goodness, we would head upstairs to hang out. Sometimes we would put a movie on and some people would watch it, others played board games, and there was always some one dancing. Music was and still is a big part of our lives. We would just spend quality time together and enjoy each others company. The girls were invited to spend the night, but I remember my parents coming to pick me up because I always had something to do Saturday morning.

All of the activities continued through out our third year together and even though most of us all go to different high schools, we make one call or one mass text and all the people will be back at the house, ready to make new memories, and reminiscing on the old ones.

Freedom Writers Diary- Book Review

“What the hell am I doing here?” Many students ask themselves this question when they step into Ms. Erin Gruwell’s class. The Freedom Writers Diary is written by real students and a teacher that turned them from school skippers to educated people that care about school, at least that’s what the teacher is said to accomplish. To me, I can tell this book was edited after it was written a first time and doesn’t seem too believable.

The book is to be about students that really struggle in school and rarely come to class because they don’t feel like it or even afraid. Erin Gruwell, the students’ English teacher changed all that. The book seemed to be as phony as an artificial Christmas tree.

The way this book was written was easy to follow, in one way. I like to get to know each character and the way this book was written, it only said different entry numbers and never said who wrote what; you just have to guess. I did enjoy hearing about all the different stories people went though but I didn’t like that once you just started to get to know the writer, it would switch and you wouldn’t know when they wrote again.

I also did not enjoy the fact that many of the students probably couldn’t write the way they did in the beginning. For example one student had a very complex sentence structure and the way the teacher describes them, they didn’t know anything, “During the day racial tensions rule the streets, at night gunshots are heard from drive-by shootings, and twenty-four hours a day, the gangs and drug dealers control the block, trying to hold down their territory.” I don’t know about you but if you never went to school and had struggling grades, I wouldn’t be writing like that.

The writing style was done in a very traditional diary from but with entry numbers and no date or time or anything. There is also no closing. In a formal diary entry, you sign off and say something like “Love,”. I have never written a diary, but have always wanted to. I suppose that it is a good idea to let the students write about what interest them that means they always should write the way they would in everyday talk. The book was an easy read and if you like to read about what really happens in the ghetto wars, then this is a good book for you.

Freedom Writers- Movie Review

War- a conflict carried on by force of arms, as between nations or between parties within a nation. That’s exactly what the kids in the movie The Freedom Writers are in. A war all about what race you are. This movie is very informative film done in a fiction way. The actors did a wonderful job and the behind the camera crew was awe-inspiring. Most defiantly a film you want to see. But I must warn you, everyone takes something different from a film so don’t just take my word for it.

Danny Devito, Michael Shamberg, and Stacey Sher were all producers and the director was Richard LaGravenese. Together they made a film that portrayed, to me, what was a very accurate film about how kids in the ghetto survive and not care about school. Every step the students take, you seem to be right there beside them. The actors that were picked for the characters almost seemed to be the kids themselves. Each actor brought sass and class to the table for their part. You can tell the actors cared about what they were acting in; they even got close to what kids would wear.

There is one scene that sticks out to me that seemed to be a turning point in the movie. While in a convenient store, a kid gets shot from someone that is against him, race wise. The shooter didn’t even know who he shot; he just shot because he was of a certain race. The special effects in this scene weren’t too exaggerated but they did a great job of showing death and the pool of blood. Because of this and some of the language anyone that is not yet thirteen should not see this movie.

Over all I think that this film gets a 3.5 out of 5 stars. Having read the book and seen the movie, the movie could have had more explicit language. With having more vulgar words that would have brought the rating up but I think that would have represented what’s really happening better. Even though this movie is to show how the teacher did a wonderful job on changing the students from the gang bangers to the educated people they are today, I do not see this movie as that. You do feel a good feeling when the students change their ways but to me, changing the world they live in is more affective and more beneficial than having the students get good grades. A good movie and excellent representation of the world we live in but not a good movie on changing the way students learn.

Keeping Faith by Jodi Picoult- Book Review

Seeing is believing. Many people think that that’s the only way to really believe in something. The definition of believe is, to have confidence or faith in the truth without absolute proof. So seeing is believing is an oxymoron. Having faith in something is believing in the non-substantial. In the book Keeping Faith by Jodi Picoult, this is a very real idea.

Faith White is eight. She seems like the average girl, until she starts to have someone talk to her, while in the hardest time of her short life; her parents divorce. This person that is talking to her makes Faith do bizarre things, and say very strange issues. Her mother, Mariah White doesn’t know what to do when Faith starts all of this. The strangest thing is that Faith says this person’s name is God. But not just any god, a woman god. Faith believes in this “God” person she is talking to so much that her whole life changes, along with everyone around. Not only does the small town that she lives in all gather around, but people from around the country here about “the girl that’s talking to God.” This book explores what Faith goes though when she just has the littlest of faith.

“ ‘Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.’” Matthew 17:20. I believe that Faith not only knew this verse but lived by it. She had never been to church, or temple, or any religious matter but she still had faith. I am actually jealous of her faith. I believe we should not only have as much faith as Faith in something, but want to know more about what we so called “believe in.”

Jodi Picoult did an amazing job of not only telling a great, entertaining story, but she also did her homework on the topic. She had many references that relate to the Bible. I was very impressed with how she tied in different bible stories to real life subjects. I recommend this book to anyone that’s looking for a good read.

“The truth doesn't always set you free; people prefer to believe prettier, neatly wrapped lies,” Picoult states in Keeping Faith. I agree with what she says because people like to see what’s on the outside, not search and see what’s on the inside. After reading this book, you will not see what’s on the outside as the most important thing, but it’s what’s on the inside that makes up who the person really is.

Thin A Documentary- Movie Review

“I wanted something for myself, so I started a diet. But once I started dieting, I couldn’t stop. I was out of control.” Brittany, 15, states when she is admitted to Renfrew Medical Center, Florida, for women with eating disorders. “Thin” a documentary film by Lauren Greenfield and sponsored by HBO is a fantastic film. It explores I depth what you go through when you have an eating disorder. As you view the movie, it takes you through 4 girls’ lives and you see what they do everyday, how they struggle, and how they cope. Shelly Guillory, 25, is admitted to Renfrew after a year of having a tube placed through her skin and directly into her stomach. “When I first got it [the tube] in I was like, this is easy access to my stomach. I could flex my muscles in a certain way and stuff would come out, or I would take a syringe and suck things out, which is totally disgusting, I know.” Before she had the tube placed in her stomach, she had one in her nose for 5 years and her dad made her get the surgery that would place it directly into her stomach because her dad told her, “My child can’t not have a tube in her nose.” Polly Williams, 30, came to Renfrew after a suicide attempt, when she ate two pieces of pizza and that threw her over the edge with everything. “I remember all the things that are symptoms of eating disorders being taught by my family: to cut my food into really small pieces, and chew very slowly and take your time, and always drink water in between so that your stomach fills up faster. I was counting calories and counting far by the time I was 11.” Polly grew up very competitively because of her sisters that where always doing better than her. Alisa, 30, is a mother of two children and she has never been thin enough for her liking. Since the age of 7 when her pediatrician told her mom that she was fat, she has always been cautious on what goes in her body. She has tried to do many things in life to make her happy but the only thing that will make her truly happy is to be thin. “I just want to be thin. If it takes dying to get there, so be it. At least I’ll get there.” And then there’s Brittney and she became a compulsive eater at 8. Eating disorders runs in the family. Her and her mom would bond with this thing called chew and spit. “We would buy bags and bags of candy and just chew it and obviously spit it out. We just thought of it as a good time; we didn’t think of it as a problem. And it was.” All four of these women are suffering with one thing, an eating disorder. How they all react is completely different due to their personalities and backgrounds. This movie was directed by Lauren Greenfield. The producers that where involved in where, R. J. Cutler, Lauren Greenfield, Amanda Micheli, Ted Skillman, and Joanne Toll. Together they made one of the best documentaries I have ever seen. Though there was not much action, it was very detailed and made you want to keep watching. You wanted to know what happened to the girls at the end. When the women went to therapy with everyone there, you felt like you where sitting next to them. There were some parts that made me feel like my heart had gotten ripped out by someone and other times where you were up lifted because the people would help someone and you could see change. Every week they had to do an art project. My favorite was when each girl first comes there they draw what they think they look like on a big piece of paper on the wall. After they are finished, the artistic therapist traces them onto the same paper with a different color marker. They both then step back and see what they think they look like and what they really look like. Though this is a documentary, it was very believable. Seeing what each girl goes through and understand what they are dealing with, really makes you think about what they have to do. When people talked, it was very believable because you could tell it wasn’t edited much. They said what was on their minds and that was portrayed into the film. Also, they ladies wore their own clothing. There was one part of a scene where Alisa tried on almost her whole wardrobe, just to find looked best on her and which one she liked the best. I recommend this movie; 4.5 out of 5 stars. Even though this film didn’t have a rating, I would mark it with a PG-13 rating for inappropriate language for those under the age of 13 without adult supervision. Many of the girls use very explicit words and they really give the feel to the movie, so you can’t take them out. When the girls purge, they also sometimes show what they do and it is very detailed. I also think that every bully should watch this. People call other people fat every day, some really take it to heart and think they’re fat. That’s how an eating disorder can start. Eating disorders are very real. It’s a disease. Many people have it, some just worse than others. If you notice an eating disorder in someone, don’t be afraid to tell someone. If you have an eating disorder, I completely understand. I used to have a slight form of anorexic and not eat for a week at a time. I soon realized that I was loosing weight I didn’t have to loose. Someone I really looked up to noticed and said I needed to start eating on a regular basis and from there on, I have become in love with food. So just be careful what you say and don’t forget to compliment those around you. You never know whose life you can save.
